The first thing that many people see when looking at someone is their smile. A smile can convey friendliness, comfort, approachability and tell you a lot about the person but unfortunately some people are reluctant to show their smile because of crooked teeth and an uneven bite. Staten Island orthodontics from the practice of Dr. Steven H. Brennan, DMD can help change those problems into a big, broad, even smile that conveys confidence and friendliness. Our orthodontist, Dr. Kim will assess your mouth and custom design a treatment program for you taking into account age, lifestyle and your mouth’s needs.
Traditional metal braces are still the most common orthodontic treatment. Using brackets placed on the teeth connected by arch wires the teeth are slowly pushed into place by varying the amount of tension on the wires. These braces are effective for patients of all ages and for almost every type of problem. Staten Island orthodontics can use colored elastics or brackets in various shapes to allow children to customize their braces. For older teenagers and adults our practice also offers, where clinically appropriate, ceramic braces, which use either clear or tooth-colored ceramic brackets and clear plastic arch wires. These braces are very hard to see and are very effective on the upper teeth. However, they tend to be more brittle than metal braces so they need more tender care when eating, brushing or flossing.
Staten Island orthodontics has an innovative approach to straightening teeth and correcting bites that can be a good alternative to traditional metal or ceramic braces because it is virtually invisible. The Invisalign system does not place brackets and wires, or anything onto the teeth. Invisalign uses a series of clear plastic trays called aligners to gently push the teeth into shape. The trays go over the teeth and fit so snugly that no one can see them at all. Our doctor sends 3-D images of your teeth and mouth to Invisalign and they develop the series of custom trays for you. Each tray is worn day and night for two weeks and is then replaced by the next tray in the series. There are between 13 – 48 trays in a series depending on each individual case. Once all the trays have been used the treatment is completed. Since the trays are removable they can be taken out to eat or brush the teeth. So the user can eat whatever they want and can really get their teeth clean. Invisalign is used with older teenage and adult patients who are concerned about the appearance of traditional braces. Call our office for an appointment and see which type of orthodontic treatment is right for you.
